CSD where appointed to carry out Engineering and Design Services on behalf on Wates Construction Group to the Royal London Hospital St BARTs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

CSD’s appointment was to provide a technical engineering design service for on behalf of St BARTs HEALTH NHS TRUST, to redevelop two dormant floors of the Royal London Hospital, into a permanent state of the art 170 bed ICU to support the COVID-19 pandemic.

CSD were tasked with mobilising our in-house specialist design team, headed up by CSD Managing Director Mark J Nelson from a standing start on Saturday 28th March 2020 to having information available for the 1st fix of the mechanical, electrical and public health services on Tuesday the 31st March 2020 by Wates in house specialist services contractor SES Engineering Services.

A truly transparent and joined-up approach was employed from the very beginning and this was essential in order to complete on time. For example, by sharing resource’s the design and planning process went from a 3-6-month timeframe to under a week.

The fit-out, which would usually take around 12 months to complete, has seen the installation teams deliver full MEP works as well as all ceilings, floors, cubicles, toilets and partitions, across two vacant floors, left empty for expansion when the hospital was first built in 2012.

Approvals and sign off period were delivered in just 4 weeks, all of which was carried out whilst the specialist teams were installing the services including commissioning, sign off, O & M documentation and formal handover.

This was truly a momentous achievement by all parties to provide this magnificent facility under extraordinary circumstance, which will be used for COVID-19 patients and to care for future critically ill patients for years to come.
