University of Huddersfield Business School

Scope:

This project comprised the building of a new Business School for the University of Huddersfield on the existing Firth Street site, which forms part of the main Queensgate Campus. The site involved the demolition of 1 No existing building and renovation of another with strip out, removal and rerouting of existing services and infrastructure, which would be reinstated upon completion.

The New, approx 3200m2, four storey building with curved glass facade forming a central courtyard, houses ground floor teaching classrooms, with gallery central corridor, first floor computer suites, cafe, and external terrace with open street gallery. The second floor comprised PhD suite, computer suites and head of department offices. The third floor comprised of a Mock courtroom and LPC room with a small external terrace area.
The existing refurbished Firth street building comprised of classroom teaching spaces, teaching administration, small offices, meeting rooms, computer lab and breakout spaces.

The mechanical & electrical services briefly comprised of:
The mechanical services comprised of provision of a VAV driven heating and cooling system to the existing classrooms with a DX VRF system c/w local CO2 controlled heat recovery units to the new. The large atrium was provided with a natural vent system via natural roof outlets for peak temperature control with local LPHW radiators for background heating. The domestic services comprised, RW harvesting with boosted cold make up and electric hot water heaters.

A new dedicated substation incorporating HV modifications and LV electrical supplies to serve the new and existing building, Lighting, Lighting Controls, Power (inc whiteboard installations), Data, Fire Alarm, CCTV (with connection to the existing campus system), attendance monitoring, Disabled refuge, External lighting to perimeter, internal courtyard and surrounding area.
