Pharmaceutical Research Laboratories (Within the UK)

Scope:

CSD where appointed by AGL to provide a technical mechanical & electrical design solution to integrate four new gas fired CHP’s into the existing heating and electrical systems spread over this complex medical research facility whilst ensuring all the systems continued to operate at full capacity, which in turn would decrease building energy consumption and reduce annual carbon emissions.

Customer Challenge

One of AGL’s customers, a large pharmaceutical company, wanted to reduce its energy and gas consumption, as well as its carbon emissions. AGL recommended the installation of four Bosch CHP (combined heat and power) units for its site.

​For Bosch Thermotechnology, this would also be the largest project of its type in the country.

The units would generate electricity at a much cheaper rate and  simultaneously produce heat.

AGL entered into a heat and electrical supply agreement with the pharmaceutical company. This enabled AGL to install the CHP units at no capital cost, to maintain ownership of the units and sell the generated energy to its customer at a reduced rate.

The Result

Since the CHP units were successfully installed, commissioned, and set to operation on 1st May 2019, the pharmaceutical company has significantly reduced its electricity costs. Saving 16% in the first year, with a projected saving of 20.4% (1st May 2020 to 30th April 2021).

​CO2 emissions have been reduced by 1208 tonnes and a significant capital saving on annual electrical costs has been achieved.

The CHP’s generate 4,500,000 KW of electric across the research facility.
