Scope:

The school brings together two new co-located facilities, which provides modern state of the art teaching facilities for Ormesby – the largest secondary school in Middlesbrough’s Education Action Zone – and Priory Woods, which is an all age school for children with special needs.

The 10,869sqm project provides each of the schools with their own dedicated teaching blocks linked by walkways to the shared heart which comprises of a large atrium, learning resource centre, dining area and therapy rooms. In addition Ormesby’s facilities include breakout spaces for group study and design areas to enhance the school’s engineering specialism. Priory Wood’s facilities include a hydrotherapy pool and dance studio.

The mechanical services provided include a biomass boiler that utilises wood pellets which is sized to provide 100% of the buildings base heating load. Two condensing gas fired boilers provide a standby resource to the primary biomass system. The hot water for the whole school is supplied by central storage calorifiers heated via LPHW off the boiler systems. The heating plant & associated systems are all housed in a central plantroom and is distributed via underground mains to each of the blocks. Two of the blocks are heated via an underfloor heating system. A significant proportion of the teaching rooms are ventilated by natural means via high and low level opening windows, however each block tends to have supplementary ventilation plant consisting of air handling units is sited on the roof of each block. There are several other rooms that are provided with heat recovery ventilation units. There is a full building management system installed throughout the facility to monitor energy usage and correct operation of the mechanical plant. The building is protected by an enhanced property protection sprinkler system throughout.

The electrical systems consist of the following. Energy efficient lighting has been installed and within all teaching spaces, the lighting is controlled by movement detectors that will detect presence or absence. The combined detector will also sense the level of daylight and when necessary, dim or turn off the artificial lighting within the classrooms. Small power is distributed from a main LV panel to sub panels distributed around the buildings. There is a full Cat 6 ICT & data installation installed throughout. The design also consisted of an L2 fire alarm system, public address, access control and DDA systems such as disabled refuge alarms and hearing induction systems.
