Scope:

The Handball Arena is a 7,500 seat arena, conditioned by 12 No air handling units located in the upper tier external plant space. Conditioned air is introduced in to builders work plenum chambers behind the seating and enters the arena via fixed diffusers beneath each seat. Air is extracted from the space at high level.

Changing areas and back of house meeting rooms / admin areas are provided with fresh air utilising local heat recovery units located at high level within the space and heating / cooling is provided by fan coil units.

Heating / cooling is provided to the building from a main energy centre which serves the whole site and 2 No 1000 Kw LTHW and 2 No 1000 Kw CHW plate heat exchangers are located in the ground floor plant room. From here heating and chilled water is distributed throughout the building. Hot water for domestic use is generated locally close to the point of use via LTHW plate heat exchangers located in the ceiling voids.
Cold water is stored within a cold water plant room and a boosted supply provides cold water to all sanitary ware. In addition a rainwater recovery system provides recycled water to toilets.

A sprinkler system provides sprinkler coverage to all concessions located above ground floor level.

All technical areas are provided with comfort cooling via wall mounted fan coil units.

The building was designed to achieve a 15 % reduction in the Building Regulations 2006 Part L energy consumption targets and a 40 % reduction of the overall water usage below 2006 usage criteria.

All services are monitored and controlled via a Building Management System and the building achieved a BREEAM excellent status.

Electrical services comprised non-essential and essential power distribution for event continuation throughout the venue to discreetly located distribution boards emanating from 2 x 1000kVA transformers. The lighting design provides a fully networked and centrally controlled and monitored emergency and general lighting scheme to all areas including public concourses and back of house areas. The Field of Play lighting is provided with lighting schemes for a multi-use sports venue for the 3 different classes of sporting events in addition to a separate lighting scheme for televised events.

Life safety systems compliant with the green guide are provided comprising an L2 fire alarm system and full PA/VA with other systems being backed by a life safety generator. A CAT5E structured cabling network provides connectivity throughout the venue. Complex security and surveillance systems are also provided for venue and public safety.
